With 32 MB of RAM, you need to use a lighter window-manager, like fvwm2.
The number of installed packages is irrelevant, unless you are trying to
run most of them at the same time :-)
Even if you increase your device swap (which I would do in any case), you
will still notice swapping with piggy applications.
But don't feel too badly; my portable has only 16 MB of RAM -- this is
fine with something like fvwm2, netscape and an xemacs session. It gets
pretty slow tho' when I fire up javac too...
