Ok, I did, and I missed the edit prompt, and ended up doing a bare bone
install. Now I only get one:

at boot, everything else remains the same.

I re-ran fdisk, good grief, no wonder the kernal panicked. My drive is
listed as /tmp/hda, all the directories are under /tmp, and I have twice
as many heads, and half the number of clyinders as I'm supposed to!
