Try using XF86Setup instead of Xconfigurator.  I've found that the
Configurator runs a couple versions behind when figuring out hardware
and such.  Setup might be able to get you going.  Simply install the RPM
for it, you've already got the VGA16 server installed (it's needed by
the setup program).  XF86Setup is back to being included with Red Hat
(back at 5.0 I had to download it and compile it myself, because Red Hat
seems to think that Xconfigurator is so much better that no one would
ever want to use something else).

BTW-Make sure you run it from the shell rather than an xterm (if you're
running X, drop out of it before running XF86Setup...you did say you had
VGA16 working, right?).
