get zip to be recognized at boot

When I installed my system, the installation program would not autodetect my parallel port zip drive.  Therefore, when I boot the system, it reports "scsi hosts detected: 0" or something like that.  I have "alias scsi_hostadapter ppa" in my /etc/conf.modules.  What I think is happening is that for some reason, the parport and parport_pc modules aren't getting loaded.  Short of recompiling the kernel (I'm lazy), is there any way I can get the kernel to load these modules before it tries to detect the pp zip?  I currently have a workaround by loading the modules in my rc.local and then loading the ppa modules, but I'd kind of like to do it the "right" way.

Thanks,
Geoff
