Robert,
Let's try and keep you with Red Hat Linux, eh?
The easiest was around this module problem is to boot the system into
single user mode, which will get you to a bash prompt before the sound
modules are loaded (or tried to be loaded). To do this, reboot the system,
and type 'linux single' or 'linux 1' at the LILO boot prompt:
LILO boot: linux 1
When you get the bash prompt, you are effectively logged into the system
as root. Use a text editor (like pico, vi, jed, etc.) to edit the
following file: /etc/conf.modules
Delete any lines that look like this:
alias sound some_module_name
alias midi some_module_name
Save the file and either reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) or just go ahead and
tell the system to continue booting up normally with this command:
# telinit 5
(assuming you had the system booting into X automatically anyway - else
replace '5' with '3').
