Re: netscape freezes w/ no net connection

Geoff

I did have this problem at one stage when I had two machines on a LAN and
one machine had a PPP link to my ISP. On one of the machines I set up a DNS
server. This all worked fine. The problem came about when I had the machine
with the DNS server switched off. The machine I was running Netscape on was
trying to contact the DNS server on the LAN and it takes a while before this
times out. While Netscape is waiting for a reply it simply hangs.

Changing my resolv.conf to only point to the ISP DNS servers solved the
problem.
This is because when the link is down there is "No route to host" so the DNS
query fails instantly. Of course when the link is up there is no problem.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Mark

Subject: netscape freezes w/ no net connection

Hello,

I have run a number of different versions of netscape and have always had
this problem. When my 'net connection is down, when netscape is started, it
will freeze for a while, before presenting an error message about not being
able to reach some DNS servers (duh). After that, it works fine. I even did
a
"MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS=True
   export MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS"
but this doesn't fix things. Anyone else know how to fix this?

Thanks,
Geoff
