Text mode internet access

I'm just getting to the point where I like working in RH 6.0 text mode
and I'm wondering if it's possible to do a set up for internet access
entirely in that mode......dial-up, DNS, login, etc. The problem is I
don't know where that data is supposed to go and the format of the
entries. Just recently, a kind soul let me know that the DNS should be
in /etc/resolve.conf and it worked but I had used Xwindows for the rest
of the setup. It seems to me that the entire internet access process
could be prepared in terminal mode and then perhaps executed through an
alias.
Is there a special directory for an ISP phone number and what else
besides the number should be included...where does the ISP name
go....log in name.....password.....whatever it takes to dial-up,
connect, logon, be verified, and get online.
If this can be done, would it be universal for all Xwindows, that is,
would the same settings be used by KDE, Gnome, etc?
Or, am I way off track?
