I have a very SLOW X (256M ram 500mhz celeron) and my video card an ATI
Xpert98 uses the Mach64 server - all of these are in one of the compatible
lists that comes with RH 6.1 - my swap space is 280MB and I am booting with
224MB of ram - linux choked when I gave it 256MB. The X window server is so
slow taht it is almost not useable.

A couple of things to consider:
Swap filesystem sizing is a bit of art and science, and there are many
views on the "right" amount of swap. Many cling to their views with
religious fervor, and that leads to much confusion about things.
The answer is that it depends on how much memory your system needs to
operate. Swap is used when RAM is full. It's a bad thing when your
applications cannot allocate any more memory.
My guess is that your X performance doesn't have much to do with the swap
issue, given that you have 256MB RAM. You don't mention your other system
config information, but off hand I'd guess it's related to the X server,
and your video card. E is quite fat, and you might want to use something a
little slimmer.
Make sure that you're using the correct X server for your card, and make
sure that you've got the appropriate acceleration options enabled, too.
This can make a HUGE diference.
HTH,
Tom
