I am having a similar problem. I had to use the isapnp utility to get Linux
6.1 to recognize the modem port, then setserial to configure it. I found a
segment fault in the Gnome serial port configuration utility and then edited
wvdial.conf manually to jump over that hurdle. I finally was able to dial
and connect as a single user to an Internet provider, only to find Netscape
complaining about a name server problem. Netscape suggests a non-root name
server may be needed and that $SOCKS_NS environment variable needs to point
to this host preference or ip address.
How does one proceed from here?
Also.. I am still not able to configure the parallel port which is a pnp on
the computer motherboard. Pnpdump apparently did not identify the port. It
did recognize a sound-blaster card and the modem, and a game port, but did
not see two on-board serial ports or the parallel port. Curiously, the two
on-board PNP serial ports are recognized by Linux and configurable by
setserial. Any ideas on how to fire up the parallel port?
TIA

running and this _was_ working until we attempted to install PHP4/Apache and
MySQL together. I can provide more information at a later time once I am at
home (wife rebooted into Windows).
