No, I don't think it's there. It's more likely on your distribution
CDROM unless you downloaded a more recent version. If you have a
/usr/share/afterstep directory, you probably already have AfterStep
installed. To check, do

  rpm -q AfterStep

If it reports "AfterStep-1.7.142 something" you already have that
version installed. If it reports "package AfterStep is not installed",
you need to install it.

You "cat .wm_style" to see if it exists and it contains "AfterStep".

Yes, it matters. Only in your home directory does it do any good. And
you need to do that only if .wm_style does not already contain
"AfterStep".

Yes, you probably are. I was allowing for the possibility that you were
logged in to a text-mode console.

Yeah, I think you're right. I was thinking of the older window managers
that let you change WMs from the exit menu. Look in your configuration
program (Gnome configuration, I think) for window managers. Look for
some option that will let you change window managers. Don't recall
where it is - I do precious little work with G/E.

I think you're pretty close. Print this stuff off and take it home with
you. Don't rely on memory. (Take it from the voice of experience. :-)

You're welcome.
