If you are using the VGA server, check your XF86Config
file, it should be in /etc/X11.

Look at the screen section, near the end.

The first Display subsection selects the default
color depth, but that can be changed with the
DefaultColorDepth setting. before the Display
subsections.

As to resolution. Each Display subsection has independent
resolution settings on the Modes line. The virtual display
size is set to the largest one. The first one listed is the
default. Change the order so the default you want is first,
the largest is the virtual size you want, and only the sizes
you want are listed.
