I wish to apologize in advanced if this is in the wrong group.
I setup a RedHat 4.2 system last week with the aid of the Unleashed
book. I was able to configure XWindows via editing the XF86Config file
to get the right display. Because that was about all I did, I decided
to blow it away and start from scratch with RedHat 5.2.
When I run startx with the very basic things (320x240, vga card with 64k
ram) I get a display, but it looks like something my unborn daughter
could draw ;-). However, when I run it with what worked under 4.2
(800x600 virtual and display, Trident 9660 [tgui9660] 2MB video ram) I
get a video signal but nothing on the screen. When I Ctrl-Alt-backspace
out of the server and examine the messages, I noticed that one seems a
bit odd
(--) SVGA: chipset: tgui9680
When I run the Xconfigurator, it seems to find the 9660 card that I have
and when I vim XF86Config I don't see any 9680 entries (note that I
might have missed them, I'm still learning this stuff), so I don't know
where that is coming from or even if it is related to my problem.
I've played around with various settings in the XF86Config but no luck.
I know that my hardware works with 4.2, were there some major changes
with the newer version? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
