Re: Speed of linux

Hmmmmmmmm..... I certainly don't know what the problem is.

I've had really good luck (probably not luck) in RH Linux running
rings around most configurations of Windoze O.S.'s.

My current linux machine at work is a HP Vectra with a Pentium
133 w/ 40 MB of RAM and almost 2 GB of disk space. It also has
127 MB of swap space defined to give it a little extra breathing
room. It's rare for it to even use the swap space.... sometimes
it does ... most the time, it doesn't.

On the other side of my desk, is a HP Vectra Pentium II 233 (might
be a 266...I'm not sure) with originally 32 MB of RAM and 4 GB
of disk space. That configuration of that machine running WinNT
4.0 workstation (I think I configured it to have 128 MB of what
M$ calls "Virtual Memory" or what the linux/unix world calls "swap").

In a head-to-head competition, the linux machine performed equally
as well and in some cases better than the high-processor PII 233
machine with Windoze NT on it.

It wasn't until the Windoze machine received more RAM (now 128 MB)
and more virtual memory (now 256 MB) that it surpassed the linux
box in performance. It was then that it was noticeable.

There are probably certain hardware/software/driver configurations
where it'd give the illusion that Windoze anything is faster than
linux, but for the most part, I've noticed that most smaller horsepower
machines with linux can keep up with the larger CPU's running a Windoze
kind of O.S.
