ISP - ppp-on

Hate to be a pest, but you have helped me setup my linux box and thanks.

I have gotten my modem to function and connect to my ISP, but there it
stops. I get to item 9.5 in Linux ppp HOWTO by Robert Hart, 31 March
1997.

sequence:
  - using minicom I enter my isp phone
  - modem dials and connects
  - I enter my id and password
  - then comes, PPP session from (id) to id beginning....~(and other
characters)
  - cursor stops at the end
  - keyboard is now inoperative
  - cursor does not move
  - enter does not appear to function
  - after 30 seconds NO CARRIER comes on screen and task bar shows
off-line

I set this whole thing up the instructions in Bill Ball's books and
whatever else I have read so far, but somewhere I must have done
something wrong. If anyone has a clue as to where I should look, your
guidance is appreciated.
