Sounds to me like the problem is probably due to memory shortage. Somebody
will probably correct me on this, but as I recall the default Redhat 5.x
kernel is fairly sizable (the value of 8mb seems to come to mind. . .). You
may want to read the kernel and modules howto docs (since you're new to
Linux) and then compile a stripped down 486 optimized kernel for your
system. Not only is this likely to be faster, it can also use considerably
less memory if you don't need to compile in support for too much crap. And
remember: modules are your friends, if you may want it and it can be
compiled as a module, compile it as a module :)
