Redhat 5.2 and WinLT modem probs!!

Does anyone know how I can get these silly winmodems to work with RH5.2?  I
have a NEC laptop with a 56k WinLT (generic Lucent winmodem), and I cant
get the thing to work under linux at all.  Using gnome-ezppp, it doesnt
even recognize the modem as existing, and using the standard ezppp it
recognizes it, but the init string and dialing and everything takes
FOREVER.  Probably about 5 minutes just to dial, needless to say no
connection is ever established.  Does anyone have a fix for this?
