Keyboard problems in X Window

My Swedish keyboard is acting funny in Red Hat 5.0:

1. When I'm in X window, I cannot get the @ | \ characters (plus some
other essential ones) to work. I have tried /usr/sbin/kdbconfig (or
whatever it's called) and tried both Swedish and Finnish setting, but
neither worked in the sense that the keys @\| etc. and the Swedish keys
åäö simply don't generate anything at all, except they seem to do
something with the shell.

2. Outside X (on the console), I can at least get the @|\ etc...keys
working fine, but pressing the Swedish åäö gives me 7-bit
representations {}| instead of the proper 8-bit characters!

Please advice! I would appreciate any help a lot!
