Most useful applications?

Hi all,

I am new both to the mailing list and to Linux.  I think reading over the
installation guide (repeatedly:->), has answered most of my questions
regarding initial setup.  I was just perusing the list of available tools that
come with Red Hat Linux 5.2, however, and though I initially thought I had a
good idea of what programs I wanted to install, I am now overwhelmed.  I do
know I want to install Apache, X Windows, the C and C++ compilers, FORTRAN,
Pascal, assembly, and Perl, as well as most of the multimedia and Internet
tools.  I have about 500 MB of free disk space to work with, so I was just
wondering if anyone had some suggestions on what the most useful, pertinent
applications were.
