questions about sound through Linux...

Subject: questions about sound through Linux...

I have set up my soundcard properly and can hear sound when i...

a) do a "cat /sounds/gong.au</dev/audio"
b) play a CD through KCD

What i cant do is get sound going through winamp or any other "sound" app
under Linux. I also DONThave sound in enligtement. What do i have to do to
change this..?
