RH 5.2 --> Kernel 2.2.1

I had a RedHat 5.2 box that has bun running smoothly since the original
install.  We need some of the new kernel features, so I attempted a kernel
upgrade.  I followed the directions on RedHat's web site, installing all of
the rqd RPM's and all of the steps.  The compile went OK, but after I
finally reboot, my network interface is gone.  My card is just a NE2000 card
that was working fine under 2.0.36. Can anyone help out on how to add this
back in?

Also, I then tried to revert back to my previous kernel, and that can't find
any modules on reboot.
