One thing to check is the "frame type" used by the NT machine. My guess is
that it's using the wrong frame type.
Linux will almost certainly be using ethernet_II, while it is possible to
use ethernet_snap, or Ethernet_802.3 as potential frame types.
Although, in looking at my NT version 4 workstation, while I can select a
frame type for IPX, I don't see an option for frame type on the IP
protocol.......
Try your ping, then run an "arp -a" from the command prompt on your NT box.
Do the same thing on your Linux box.
Another possible problem is that one of your patch cables is bad.
Your NT box should have an arp entry of the MAC address of the Linux box,
and the linux box should have an arp entry with the MAC address of the NT box.
It's possible that the transmit pairs of the NT boxes' patch cable are bad,
or that the receive pairs of the linux boxes' cable are bad. This would be
fairly unusual, but it is possible.
Hope this helps...
