Well, when I installed 5.2 the last time (when it worked) it
automatically recognized my Zip drive during the installation/setup.
This was, in fact, an improvement over 5.0 where I did have to do a
little extra work. So, no, there was no custom kernel needed at the
time.
In trying to think about things that might have changed in between that
time and now here is all I can come up with:
- Switched from a mediocre PCI video card to the AGP
Riva TNT card I have now. I think this was done after
the working 5.2 installation.
- Added the CD-RW drive. Again, I'm not sure whether this
was before or after the working 5.2 installation.
- Changed the "Plug and Play OS?" BIOS setting during
all this installation stuff, but I am almost positive
I set it back.
Tonight and/or over the weekend I'll play around with installing the (up
to) 3!=6 times it will take me to test all the combinations. I *really*
was hoping for a good pointer as to a likely candidate for the problem
before giving out this information because I'm not really convinced that
any of these things (except, maybe for the BIOS setting) should be
causing this much trouble.
Anyway, thanks for the response.
