I just remembered that when I put a different external modem on it, a
different brand (I can't remember), it worked fine. Just not the Boca.
This is the second time/second machine that I have had a problem with
external Boca modems with Linux.

I cannot start Minicom. It gives me an error about /dev/modem not existing.
I will try the setserial, and the echo command. I didnt' know I could do
the "echo xxxxx >...." with Linux.
Thanks

Have you tried minicomm or some other terminal program.
Use them to test the modem<->PC connection. Then debug
the chat scripts for ppp/slip connections.
Another good test for the modem, is
echo "ATDT 1234" >/dev/ttyS1
and see if it tries to dial.
ttyS1 is for COM1
Look at the setserial program to configure
the serial port too.
