Shutdown Problem with 6.0

I just installed 6.0 and am unable to execute a shutdown. I have tried
it with several different options, all as root. No error message is
displayed; the shell prompt comes back but nothing happens.

I reinstalled a second time, selecting everything, thinking that
possibly I had missed a critical component, but it didn't help.

Clearly, I need to be able to do a clean shutdown for the integrity of
my system. What can I do?
