Two quick questions

Hello all,

        I am very new to linux and I just installed 6.0 on my CTX laptop.  I
have a couple of questions that I need answered please and if they sound
stupid I'm sorry:

1.  Whenever I start Gnome I get a message that says" No response to the
SaveYourself command.
The program may be slow, stopped or broken. You may wait for it to respond or
remove it."  I've hit cancel everytime it has come up, should I remove it?
Could this be why Gnome sometimes locks up?

2.   I just bought I PCMCIA modem, how do I go about getting connected to the
net  installing drivers of the diskette configuring and all that?
