Re: help burning a redhat cd

No, it is not possible to use NFS or "hard disk install" to install off a DOS
partition. The install is a UNIX process and needs a UNIX environment and UNIX
file permissions to work.

Also, you cannot create the CD image in DOS/Windows for the same reason. You
need to be able to put the UNIX CD-ROM extensions in the iso image, and that
means the UNIX file permissions, symbolic links, etc. must be all intact on in
the originating file system. Once you have the .iso image file, you can burn
the CD in DOS/Windows, because it just does a bit-for-bit copy of the .iso
image file to the CD. This is why people are looking for complete .iso image
files to download, even though they will be about 600mb.

The one way around this is to use an FTP install. This requires a boot floppy
and a supplemental floppy. It creates a UNIX environment in memory from the
supplemental floppy. Then, all you need is the RPMS directory from the
installation image, and as long as the files were downloaded to DOS in binary
mode, the permissions no longer matter. I have done an install such as this
from RPMS on a DOS image.
