I'm a beginner, about 2 to 3 steps from the bottom of a 100 step Linux
ladder.
When I first installed RH 5.2, I was able to print out man pages until I
had to shut off the printer and computer before one of the long man
pages had finished printing. After that, no matter what I selected to
print, that same man page seemed to be the only thing that would print,
regardless of new text or how I configured with 'printtool'. (My
printer is a HP-600C)
In desperation, I tried deleting and reinstalling RH5.2 and now I can't
get the printer to print any readable text. It goes through the motions
as though it's going to print but the paper just runs through and comes
out blank except as noted below.
I've run through the 'printtool' operation many times and tried various
filters, and different configurations. When I run the print test, it
seems that it works sometimes, depending on which filter/printer
combination I select but I'm not really sure what the print test is
supposed to display.
I've looked at /var/spool/lpd/lp and as far as I can tell things
are normal there (according to some printer HOWTOs). I've had to delete
the old lp whenever I tried a different filter but each time, it seems
to recover.
When I try to print something, a single column of overprinted characters
prints near one edge of the paper. I'm guessing but it appears as
though all the characters in each line print over each other without any
carriage movement but line feed seems to
be working.
I'm open to suggestions as to what to check.
A side question----when I deleted and reinstalled RH5.2---is there a
possibility that some remnant of the original installation remained to
contaminate the new installation? I did the deleting with Druid and
then ran it again to reinstall RH5.2.
