I start fetchmail from my ppp_up.local script. this script
lives in (I think) /etc/ppp. This way when ever the ppp link
is up fetchmail runs, I kill tetchmail in ppp_down.local.
This way fetchmail does not drive the PPP link but only runs if
the connection is made from some other reason. When fetchmail
does run I have it go into background mode and check for mail
every minute. A cron job could still bring up PPP every hour.
If you do this the system will check every hour if not connected
but will check every minute if you are connected for some other
reason, like web surffing.
I do this with xntpd (time sync) too. So my clock gets fixed
if the ppp link is active but I never bring the link up just
to sync the clock.
If you use sendmail, adding "sendmail -q" ppp_up.localto is a
good idea too so that the outbound queue gets processed.
