Mirroring a Linux box

Imagine a scenario in which you had a Linux box all set up and you wanted to
make another one "just like it" as a backup. Would you use "dump" and
"retrieve?" Or dd if the hard disks were identical? Is this indeed necessary
if I want to use dd?
You have probably guessed that I did not set up the first one and do not have
the expertise to set up everything that was done on it, so doing it from
scratch is not an option, unless I just copied over config files from /etc.
How do I carbon copy a Linux box? Anybody done it?
TIA, Glenn
