I'm somewhat confused about the root directory.  While probing around, I
found that when I execute:

         [root localhost/root]#  ls

I see the contents of  the   /root     directory.

Then when I execute

        [root localhost /] #  ls

      a different listing appears.

According to a web page that describes a typical directory tree at:

  /   is called the "root directory"  .

 So ---what kind of directory is    /root     and where does it fit in 
the directory tree?
