glibc upgrade

Hi, I have Redhat 5.2 with glibc-2.0.7-36 (the version which comes with
Redhat 5.2). I tried to upgrade to glibc-2.1.1 without using RPMs ie, I
compiled and installed the libraries. Now none of the programs work! Every
program says version 2.1.1 of the libraries not found. I tried to go back
to old version using the Redhat CD using the upgrade option but the
install of glibc always fails. Could someone please tell me what I need to
do to atleat get back to the old version. Thanks in advance.
