You can always work in text mode. The GUI interface, commonly called X uses the graphics capability of the card and must match the card or it don't work. Check the list of cards supported by 3.3.1 at www.Xfree86.org. Your card is supported by 3.3.3. You can get 3.3.3 at one of the mirror sites and install. I don't know if your card is supported by 3.3.1.
