I posted this once before but after agonizing hours and a sheer desperation
to get onto the internet in Linux, I'm posting this again. It all boils down
to: no internet- no Linux for me! And I'm desperate to use it!
Remembering I'm a new user, here is my biggest problem:
Ethernet card setup with cable modem.
My Card is a pnp ne2000 compatible Realtek 8019. According to Win98, it's on
IRQ 3 with an address of 0220 -023F
Here are the steps I've taken (got this off a web page at
http://members.home.net/jasonbrossa/Linux/index.html):
1. Run pnpdump. Dumped into a file called intel.conf.
2. Edited intel.conf. pnpdump found two pnp cards: my modem and my ethernet
card (by the way, I can't get either to work but I'm in an iterative process
here and would just like to get on the web!). I uncommented the line that
looks like
(IO 0 (BASE 0x220))
The base address was right (though it doesn't have the -023F that Win98
showed-does this matter?)
Then I uncommented the IRQ line and confirmed it read IRQ 3
Then I uncommented the ACT Y line.
I did not touch any of the info for the modem.
Saved and closed file.
3. Next I ran isapnp intel.conf (I guess this my settings)
Here is the error I get when I do this (it reads something like this):
Board 1 has Identity... (numbers and stuff- this is my ethernet card)
Board 2 has Identity...( this is my modem card)
FATAL- Resource conflict allocating 32 bytes of IO at 220
FATAL- IO Range check attempted while device activated
FATAL- Error occurred executing request 'IORESCHECK'
Further action aborted
I typed the above from handwritten notes, so it might not have come out
exactly like that, but close.
4. I have checked the interrupts and ports using cat /proc/ioports and
interrupts and see no conflict.
I have the next steps written down that I need to do, but right now I'm
stuck here...
Remember, I'm almost completely new to Unix/linux, so anything too techspeak
is likely to baffle me.
I have also disabled PnP on the card itself os it is not enabled. Even if
you can't answer this, if you could recommend a place where I might fing
answers, I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for any help.
