Hi everybody,
I tried to install Red Hat 6.0 on my system last
night.
I formatted the whole hard disk ( IBM 10.1 GB ),
formerly with Win98 before I began
The problem occured when I used Disk Druid to
specify new partitions.
I think the crucial point is at where I
specified the root partition to be of size 500MB.
After I specified the partitions and clicked ok,
there were some error messages.
I forgot to note those
messages down, but when I rebooted the machine and tried to
install again,
I encountered these error messages at the Disk
Druid:
"An error has occured reading the partition
table for the block device hda. The error was - No such File or
directory"
"An error has occured - no valid devices
were found on which to create new filesystems. Please check your hardware for
the cause of this problem"
So I tried fdisk instead, and it displayed my
hard disk model number,
but when I selected Edit, the whole screen just
blinked and stayed in the same screen.
I rebooted my machine using a DOS bootup disk,
and ran fdisk,
I can see that there are 1 PRI DOS and 1 EXT DOS
partition, but I can't see the logical
drives,
I tried to delete the logical drives on the
extended partition,
and the screen tells me that all logical drives
have been deleted,
but when I tried to delete the extended
partition, the screen tells me that logical drives still exist.
Next, I tried fips.exe in \DOSUTILS on the Red
Hat CD.
It just scrolled some numbers and text, but I managed to catch
something about partition overlapping I tried Partition Magic, but it gave me this
critical error #116, which is "Partition table begin
and start inconsistent"
I tried searching in the newsgroups, but the
solution seems to be to use the "expert" mode in fdisk, but I can't
even display my partitions in fdisk, or any other program, for that
matter.
So, please drop me a mail at gwunwai pacific net sg, or respond to
the newsgroup; I'm really lost at this point.
Thanks,
Gwun Wai
