RE: Newbie Reinstall question

Title: RE: Newbie Reinstall question

Hi Jay

I'm a Linux newbie myself, and I have re-intalled RedHat quite a few times..... If you want to get rid of Lilo, just run fdisk /mbr (from your DOS prompt), and this will then "clear" the MBR and remove Lilo from it. Then just reboot with your RedHat CD and re-install. When you get to the stage where you can choose the partition program, choose Disk Druid and delete your Linux partitions and then re-create them. This is the easiest way for me to get a clean start.... (Remember to remove important data from your Linux prtitions first)

Hope it helps, and please let me know what happened.....

Kind Regards
Quintis

Subject: Newbie Reinstall question

Ok I admit it, I'm new to Linux and I thought I would try poking around
a little to figure things out.

I'm running a Win98/Linux machine and decided to play with the Kernel
in Redhat 6.0.  Really it's not my fault, I thought I could just go to the RH
FTP site find any updates or patches and install them with the click of the
mouse :)

Any how to make a long story short I managed to make a little mess of things.

I'm able to start the system and use Linux to an extent, but I think I would be
better off trying everything over from scratch.

My partitions are as follows..

135MB /Swap file
15MB /Boot
2GB /Root
8 +/- GB Win98

I would just go into partition Magic program and format the Linux partitions
and just recreate them, but I'm concerned about the Lilo program that boots on
startup.  Should I unload Lilo in some special way?

I do have the RD install CD if that makes any difference.

Please if anyone has any ideas on how I should go about putting things back
together
let me know.

Thank you!

Jay
