I'm not sure yet what is wrong, but you can get past the "hang"
by doing "route -n".  The "hang" is a 2-minute DNS timeout.
Apparently, your default gateway is not specified in the DNS.

This does beg the question of whether or not you cannot access
the network (in the strict IP sense) or simply don't have DNS
working.  Have you tried reaching machines by IP?
