If you want the other primary partitions use fdisk.
FYI, DOS/Win9x WON't let you add multiple Primary partitions either.
So DD is just doing things the way DOS/Windows
users are used to.
If you check the partition table (fdisk -l /dev/hda)
you will see that hda2 is listed as an extended partition.
