Problems with samba

I am trying to put a linux box (RH-6.1) on a Win98 peer-to-peer network.

I run samba and can see the linux box icon in the Network Neighborhood
of the Win98 boxes. But can't get any service, even if I try to connect
using the smbclient.

Even
  #smbclient -L linuxbox
fails.

I looked at the relevant HOWTO, tried everything - still no joy.

I am a newbe to linux I must be missing something.
