I had to manually edit my Xconfig file (in /usr/lib/X11, as I remember) with all the scan frequencies etc of my monitor, even though it was one of the monitors listed in the install program (Samsung SyncMaster 3Ne - I had to get the frequencies out of the monitor's manual). Otherwise, whenever I did 'startx' the machine froze with no display at all. Also, for some reason 'startx 2' worked and 'startx' didn't - never fathomed that one. Note this was installing RH5.1; haven't managed to install 6 as the installer doesn't like my SCSI setup....
