Well, having understood that sometimes you will *not* negotiate the
fastest available speed, I have a site close by that I "ping" from an
xterm window, the same window that I ran the "/sbin/ifup ppp0" (and
/sbin/ifdown ppp0) to start the modem to connect.
This may not be written up on the cover of L.J. magazine but it will
give you a ballpark idea if your connection was negotiaited down to
around 28.8 or above 40kbps.
This site is an ISP and is consistant. My alias in my
"/home/myname/.bashrc" file looks like this " alias p="ping -c5
whatever.com" and that gives me 5 pings, which will show me on the
screen the elapsed time(s). and I just hit the "p" key after the
modem has connected. It got to the point that I could tell be the
sound of the "handshake" if it was a fast connection or not. But I
still checked before disconnecting and redialing for a better
connection. It saved me the hassle of firing up my browser for a
reference.
There was a fix for this with a GUI of some sort, but I just kept
**what worked for me**
