Not an answer. But mine just started doing it yesterday. This after
changing residence. I open the drive (a top-loading scsi model), close
it and try again. It always works then.

Have no idea if this is due to something that's been upgraded or maybe
a cable I connected backward on another device. Or maybe even a loose
connection.

Still investigating as time permits.
