AOL is a proprietary connection that is only accessed through the
software they provide on a cd-rom for Mac and Windoze machines.

There isn't a version for linux listed anywhere there on that
page.  

It'd be different if AOL does everything a normal ISP does...
but they don't.  Everything is proprietary.  You can't take
IE5 and Outlook Express and expect AOL to work for you after
you setup all of the parameters.  

That's why AOL loads up a hard disk with a bunch of software
to dial the connection, draw the screen, surf, get mail, browse
newsgroups, chat, etc, etc, etc.... all AOL homegrown stuff
by their own design.
