	A relative of mine began his Linux adventure with a USR Winmodem and, yes... though MiniCom would dial, he could not get the ppp scripts or anything to work in this. After he sat and attempted to 'make' this work (for a month or so) he finally went out and got a non-plug&pray modem and has been enjoying the Linux box since. However, the moral of the story is... if in doubt if the modem will work, try to see if the hardware compatability list has your hardware listed and 2, if it is not listed and you can't find any device drivers and don't know anyone who writes device drivers, then I would just get a different piece of hardware and save that piece for a rainy day and a Windoze machine.
