What you need is a more conservative approach.
Tell the setup program that
1) You have a standard low-end VGA (640 x 480 x 16 color) system.
2) Do NOT boot up to X-Windows. Come up with command line login
then type "startx" to bring up X Windows.
Get the above to work THEN worry about tweaking the X Windows
setup to get better video mode.
