Book recommendations for shell commands and programming

Newbie question:

I'm looking for something akin to the old Running MS-DOS book by Van Wolverton,
but applicable to Unix / BSD / Linux C, Bourne and bash shells.

SAMS Linux Unleashed is a general discussion of Linux environment,
but doesn't describe all of the files (configuration tables) in the various
Linux directories, nor does it offer a reference and examples of
various bash prompt commands.

Does anyone have book recommendations for shell commands and programming?
