re: Book recommendations for shell commands and programming

I'm a newcomer (and will probably stay in that state forever!!). I liked
Richard Petersen's Linux Programmer's Reference (McGraw-Hill---a compact book
about $18; commands organized by function, usage and intent); O'Reilly's
Linux in a Nutshell ( commands organized alphabetically, but more
comprehensive); there's another truly comprehensive commands book whose name
I can't remember---I found this too intimidating. Also O'Reilly's Running
Linux is a useful guide. The innumerable How-Tos and this mailing list are
also a very good way to learn.

Newbie question:

I'm looking for something akin to the old Running MS-DOS book by Van Wolverton,
but applicable to Unix / BSD / Linux C, Bourne and bash shells.

SAMS Linux Unleashed is a general discussion of Linux environment,
but doesn't describe all of the files (configuration tables) in the various
Linux directories, nor does it offer a reference and examples of
various bash prompt commands.

Does anyone have book recommendations for shell commands and programming?
