Re: Gnome Exit

The CTL-ALT-F[1-7] keyboard shortcuts allow you to switch between the different
virtual consoles in linux, of which in RedHat as distributed there are 6.
Number 7 is the GUI when one is running. This is another way to a command
prompt, but does not exit the GUI.

You will find that if you use CTL-ALT-F1 after running startx (with no trailing
&) you get back to a console that does not have a command prompt. Using your
recently learned skills, you can use a CTL-z to stop the foreground process
(startx) and then the "bg" command to put it in the background. Now you have a
working command prompt there. While the startx command is in the "stopped"
state and before you issue the "bg" command, if you go back to the GUI with a
CTL-ALT-F7, you will find that things still work. This is because everything
that is running in the GUI is many levels down from the actual "startx"
command. So while the startx process itself is stopped, it really has nothing
to do anyway until right at the end of exiting the GUI.
