I checked the cmos out, that setting is disabled.  I went ahead and used the
SCSI bios( apaptec 2940 uw card) to do a low level format of the drives.
This suceeded.  I then tried to install RH 6.0 again.  I got all the way
through checking drives, but got a VFS kernel panic when it attempted to
format the 2nd disk.  Oh yeah.. I'm using the updated disk images to evade
recent probs. with the adaptec 2940 controller.  (7880 chipset)

Could this be bad hardware? Cables? Drives?
