Rob,
it said that it couldn't find the file, or
module dependancy or whatever.
Does it say this each time you boot up? Can you post the _exact_ text of the
message to the list? (look in /var/log/messages - if it's not there change the
reporting level by going into syslog.conf (man syslog.conf ?)
Adding the _correct_ entry to /etc/conf.modules should be all that's required to
get it going automatically. Can you send the entry you put to the list for
people to see?

Subject: sound card woes
Hello:
I recently installed RH 6.1 on my laptop, ran soundcfg, and it told me that
I needed a driver and where to get it on the net. OK so far. I downloaded
it, unzipped it, and followed the instructions: did 'soundprobe' then 'make
install' and finally 'dmesg.' After those steps I was able to use some of
the applications in KDE for sound (midi mixer, media player). Sound coming
out fine. I followed the instruction also to add 'alias sound maestro' to
my /etc/conf.modules file.
When I shut down, I saw a message to the effect that it was saving my
settings, but when I rebooted, it said that it couldn't find the file, or
module dependancy or whatever. I repeated the steps and again, it works,
but I would like it to automatically see my card on bootup and play the KDE
system sounds. Note that I did go into KDE and associate sounds with
certain events. While I can play those sounds manually by opening up media
player, they don't play with the system events.
What do I need to do here? I this time to "recompile the kernel?" If so,
how do you do that?
If you haven't guessed, I am fairly new to Linux, so specific directions
will be helpful. Also, just an FYI, I have installed all of the files off
of the RedHat disc.
Thanks,
Rob Benson
