If you look at any linux laptop support mailing (and indeed this list) you will see that XFree86 config issues and PCMCIA config issues dominate the postings. You are travelling up a learning curve while you are conquering those problems. It can be frustrating but it _IS_ worth it! If something doesnt work on Windows, youre basically stuck, unless you have access to paid technical support. In Linux you have access to free tech support and also ultimately to the developers of the drivers/ applications themselves (really). Yes, the price you must pay (if you want it all for free) is that you have to do alot of the reading yourself. Many people who like linux dont mind doing this because generally its knowledge that helps in other places and is worth having anyway. You can always access paid support if you dont want to go down that road -- indeed you should be entitled to some paid technical support as you purchased an official boxed version of Red Hat Linux. Perhaps to start with you may be more comfortable going that way. Alternatively you may be able to go to a users group or an installfest and some kind person may help you out for free. Perhaps that would be a good way to go. It isn't necessarily true that you will have more probs on your desktop than on your laptop, even though it has more misc. devices. Many people think laptops would be better suited to a separate distribution, but PCMCIA (including cardbus) is included in the newer 2.3.x kernels themselves and is not now a separate package. I also hope that XFree86 3.4 will put lots of the resolution config issues laptop owners have to bed. As I said I know of one case where the latest pre-release beta has done just that.
